No Rain on Caribbean Holiday

By Anna Lynn Sibal

The main reason why people go to the Caribbean islands to get away is because they want to enjoy the warm Caribbean sunshine, the crystal clear sea and the fine, powdery sand. People believe that the Caribbean islands are a tropical paradise where the sun always shines.

The sad truth is that it does rain in paradise, and because many of the islands on the Caribbean Sea are on the path taken by the hurricanes that form on the Atlantic Ocean, it does rain hard there on the islands lots of times. In many of the islands, a single day can be liberally spattered with both sunshine and rain.

While rain is indeed inevitable when traveling to the Caribbean islands, there is no reason for your Caribbean getaway to be spoiled by the rain. There are ways to thwart the rainy day blues in the Caribbean; all it takes is a little planning so that you will get most of the sunshine during your visit to the islands.

First of all, you may want to avoid going to the islands during hurricane season. Hurricane season is from June to September, and even if there are no hurricanes in sight during this time, tropical storms are bound to occur. Try not to schedule your travel to the islands during the hurricane season.

It is understandable, however, that the hurricane season may be the perfect time for some to go to the Caribbean islands because the months of June to September are the summer months on the northern hemisphere. In this case, you may want to choose to go to an island that is located a little away from the storm zone and is therefore not in the path usually taken by hurricanes. Such islands include the Netherland Antilles (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao), Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and Grenada. The weather in these islands is always stable and mild.

Or you could always go to Bermuda, where it is warm in the months of May to September. You may want to reconsider going to Bermuda outside of these months because it can get really cold there when it is not summer.

Decide if you want to go to an island where it is windy or where it is warm. It is always windy and cool in resorts located in islands with higher elevation. On the other hand, temperatures are always hot in resorts along the sea level.

Lastly, always check out the weather forecasts when you are down there on the islands. Weather may be erratic at best, but it is always good to be prepared for sudden rains when you go out.

If the rains do strike on your vacation, you could still save yourself from being bored in your room. Organize or join an indoor activity. Check out your hotel to see if they have a casino or an indoor pool and while your time away there. Or, if you feel like it, you can schedule a spa treatment on a rainy day.
